تمر 59 يوما عن الإضراب المفتوح عن الطعام الذي يخوضه المدافع البحريني عن حقوق الإنسان عبد الهادي الخواجة، الذي سبق وأن تعرض للاعتقال التعسفي والمحاكمة العسكرية بالمؤبد على خلفية آرائه السياسية والحقوقية ومساندته للمظاهرات المطالبة بالتغيير في البحرين، والتي تعرضت لقمع شديد واختطافات واعتقالات عشوائية ومحاكمات صورية في حق مجموعة من المدنيين البحريين. وأدت مضاعفات هذا الإضراب المفتوح عن الطعام إلى تدهور الوضع الصحي لمعتقل الرأي والضمير عبد الهادي الخواجة، الذي بات يواجه مصير الموت، وهو ما جعل إدارة السجن تنقله إلى مستشفى عسكري بعد فقدانه لـ 10 كيلو غرام من وزنه وبات يعاني من انخفاض ضغط الدم ولا يقوى على الكلام أو الحركة وبتعرض لفقدان الوعي باستمرار بشكل يجعله مرغما على التغذية بواسطة محاليل تحقن في الوريد. وعلى هذا الأساس، أعلن المكتب التنفيذي لتجمع المدافعين الصحراويين عن حقوق الإنسان في نداء عاجل عن تضامنه مع عبد الهادي خواجة وعائلته التي باتت عرضة للمضايفات وانتهاكات السلطات البحرينية ومع كافة المتضامنين معه والمطالبين بإطلاق سراحه، وعن انخراطه إلى جانب مجموعة من المنظمات والجمعيات الحقوقية الدولية لإنقاذ حياته دفاعا عن حقه في الحياة والسلامة البدنية والجسمانية من أجل استرجاعه حريته وباقي المعتقلين البحرينيين المحكومين بأحكام قضائية قاسية وجائرة بسبب مشاركتهم في المظاهرات السلمية ودفاعهم عن حقوق الإنسان ببلدهم.
