The Occupation We Choose to Ignore’

Do you know who I am? I am a Sahrawi. The land to which I refer is what is known today as the non-self-governing territory ofWestern Sahara. My country was colonized by the Spanish and the French between 1884 and 1975, divided in two and occupied by Moroccan and Mauritanian forces thereafter, and has been ruled exclusively by the Kingdom of Morocco from 1979 until the present.

The Western Sahara: forgotten first source of the Arab Spring

this is one part of the Arab Spring that western governments don't want to talk about. And their silence, and the UN's complicity in it, is why that repression continues, and a terrible injustice is perpetuated.

King of Morocco to be biggest benefactor of EU trade agreement - Telegraph

it has emerged that the single biggest beneficiary of the deal will be the King of Morocco, who is head of one of the three largest agricultural producers in the north African country and lays claim to 12,000 hectares of the nation's most fertile farmland.

North African Dispatches Africa’s Forgotten Colony

Oblivion it seems is the current reality for the arid North African territory of Western Sahara; often referred to as Africa’s ‘Last Colony’. In my opinion, it would be more accurate to describe it as ‘Africa’s Forgotten Colony’.

The Basque Parliament unanimously requested the European Union (EU) that if a new fisheries agreement with Morocco is negotiated, it should not include the territorial waters of Western Sahara.

The proposal was made by Progress and Democracy Union (UPyD), whose representative, Gorka Maneiro, stressed that the extension of the current bilateral agreement expires at the end of February, which means that a new one will have to be negotiated.

The UpyD’s initiative was agreed among all groups -- Basque Nationalist Party (PNV), Socialist Party (PSE-EE), Popular Party (PP), Aralar and Basque Solidarity (EA) --except Ezker Anitza / IU, however it also supported the motion.

In the document, EU institutions are urged to condition the negotiation of the future agreement with Morocco under the observation of Sahrawis' human rights.

It is further intended that the EU institutions negotiate with the legitimate representatives of the Saharawi people, the Polisario Front, if they want to exploit their water and Community vessels to fish in that fishery.

The Basque Parliament hopes the Government of Spain and the EU institutions will actively promote within the United Nations a "fair, lasting and adjusted to international law" solution to the decolonization process of Western Sahara, EFEreported.

Meanwhile, the Socialist parliamentary Jesus Loza warned that the situation of "blockage" to be borne by the Saharawi population harms the local inhabitants and the Moroccans.

Meanwhile Carmelo Barrio, PP deputy, explained that historically the Basque Parliament has spoken in the same direction regarding this issue.

"We hope to influence the rule of law and human rights by Morocco in Western Sahara", the parliamentarian added.

For his part, Maneiro asked representatives of the PP and PSE-EE to change the positions of their parties in the Congress of Deputies on this issue.

"It would be an absolute, definitive and essential step forward for the Saharawi people to reach freedom", he said.

Finally, Jone Berriozabal, deputy for the PNV, reported that the EU signed fishing agreements with Morocco that affect the Sahara, without the government of that country observing the population human rights.
