The Occupation We Choose to Ignore’

Do you know who I am? I am a Sahrawi. The land to which I refer is what is known today as the non-self-governing territory ofWestern Sahara. My country was colonized by the Spanish and the French between 1884 and 1975, divided in two and occupied by Moroccan and Mauritanian forces thereafter, and has been ruled exclusively by the Kingdom of Morocco from 1979 until the present.

The Western Sahara: forgotten first source of the Arab Spring

this is one part of the Arab Spring that western governments don't want to talk about. And their silence, and the UN's complicity in it, is why that repression continues, and a terrible injustice is perpetuated.

King of Morocco to be biggest benefactor of EU trade agreement - Telegraph

it has emerged that the single biggest beneficiary of the deal will be the King of Morocco, who is head of one of the three largest agricultural producers in the north African country and lays claim to 12,000 hectares of the nation's most fertile farmland.

North African Dispatches Africa’s Forgotten Colony

Oblivion it seems is the current reality for the arid North African territory of Western Sahara; often referred to as Africa’s ‘Last Colony’. In my opinion, it would be more accurate to describe it as ‘Africa’s Forgotten Colony’.

The head of the Ministry of Environment, Rural and Marine Affairs (MARM) of Spain, Rosa Aguilar, has welcomed the extension of the Protocol for the Fisheries Agreement between the European Union (EU) and Morocco, believing that it provides "peace and guarantees the future of the Spanish fleet."

The minister stressed that Spanish vessels fishing in Moroccan waters will not have to interrupt their activities.

Under the bilateral agreement, 101 Spanish vessels are permitted into this fishery until 27 February 2012.

"We now have a year to get a good fisheries deal between the European Union and Morocco to safeguard jobs and security which guarantees that our fleet can carry out their professional activity," said Aguilar.

Therefore, they will work "solidly" to achieve it, she added.

Authorities on both sides signed for one year extension of the current fisheries agreement in Rabat, which grants 119 licenses to the EU fleet in return for annual compensation of EUR 36.1 million.

This protocol maintains the same fishing opportunities, number of vessels and financial contribution which the protocol that expired on Sunday did.

The licences which will be distributed to the Spanish fleet are for:

  • 20 Andalusian vessels, most of which are from Barbate, of the northern artisanal fleet, fishing for pelagic species;
  • 20 Andalusian vessels, which are from the northern artisanal fleet and are equiped with bottom longline gear;
  • 20 vessels from the Canary Islands which are part of the southern artisanal fleet;
  • 17 vessels of the demersal fishing fleet which will preferably be, where appropriate, Galician vessels;
  • 23 tuna pole and line vessels (18 from the Canaries and 5 from the Basque region);
  • 1 vessel in the category of industrial pelagic.
