The Occupation We Choose to Ignore’

Do you know who I am? I am a Sahrawi. The land to which I refer is what is known today as the non-self-governing territory ofWestern Sahara. My country was colonized by the Spanish and the French between 1884 and 1975, divided in two and occupied by Moroccan and Mauritanian forces thereafter, and has been ruled exclusively by the Kingdom of Morocco from 1979 until the present.

The Western Sahara: forgotten first source of the Arab Spring

this is one part of the Arab Spring that western governments don't want to talk about. And their silence, and the UN's complicity in it, is why that repression continues, and a terrible injustice is perpetuated.

North African Dispatches Africa’s Forgotten Colony

Oblivion it seems is the current reality for the arid North African territory of Western Sahara; often referred to as Africa’s ‘Last Colony’. In my opinion, it would be more accurate to describe it as ‘Africa’s Forgotten Colony’.

Western Sahara: referendum on self-determination necessary « Mojca Kleva — Member of the European Parliament | Western Sahara Update

As a member of the European Parliament intergroup for the support of Western Sahara, MEP Mojca Kleva attended in Ljubljana the international symposium, organized by the Faculty of Arts, Western Sahara: struggle for freedom. The purpose of the conference was to draw attention to the circumstances in which people of Western Sahara live, and to the repression and oppression exercised by Marocco. From a legal point of view, Morocco has been illegally occupying the area for the last 36 years.
“The solution, which would enable the people from Western Sahara to live a free and decent life, is the referendum on self-determination. The resolution, which was adopted in April 2012 by the UN Security Council, calls on Morocco to continue negotiations without preconditions, in order to achieve an equitable and mutually acceptable political solution that will provide the Sahrawis the right to self-determination.
In April, the European Parliament adopted a report on human rights, which highlighted the status of the Saharawi people, and in December 2011 it was able to block the fisheries agreement EU – Morocco. Unfortunately, the agricultural agreement between Morocco and the European Union was adopted,” said MEP Kleva.
